How to Install UPVC SWR Pipes for Drainage: Step-by-Step Guide
UPVC SWR (Soil, Waste & Rain) pipes are the modern replacement for traditional cast iron and asbestos cement drainage pipes. They are lightweight, easy to install, corrosion-free, and require virtually no maintenance.
Tools & Materials Required
- UPVC SWR pipes and fittings (Ring-Fit or Self-Fit)
- Pipe cutting saw or hacksaw
- Measuring tape and marker
- Pipe deburring tool or sandpaper
- Rubber lubricant (for Ring-Fit joints)
- Solvent cement (for Self-Fit joints)
- Pipe clips and brackets
- Spirit level
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Before purchasing pipes, sketch the drainage layout. Note the fall required (minimum 1:60 gradient for horizontal runs), the number of elbows, junctions, and clean-out access points needed.
Step 2: Measure and Cut Pipes
Measure each pipe run carefully. Mark the cut with a square line and cut using a hacksaw or fine-toothed saw. Deburr the cut end thoroughly — rough edges damage rubber ring seals.
Step 3: Ring-Fit Assembly
Ring-Fit pipes use a rubber ring gasket in the socket. Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the spigot end and rubber ring. Push the spigot straight into the socket up to the insertion mark, then pull back 10–15mm to allow for thermal expansion.
Step 4: Self-Fit Assembly
Self-Fit uses solvent cement bonding. Clean both surfaces with cleaner/primer, apply cement evenly on the spigot and inside the socket, and join immediately with a quarter turn. Hold for 30 seconds.
Step 5: Securing Pipes
Fix pipes using the correct bracket spacing: vertical stacks every 1.2m, horizontal runs every 0.6m. Ensure the pipe is properly supported at all fittings to prevent joint stress.
Step 6: Testing
Before closing walls or ceiling, perform a water test. Block the drain and fill the system with water for 30 minutes. Check all joints for leaks.
