Agriculture Irrigation Pipes: Choosing the Right System for Your Farm
Agriculture accounts for over 70% of freshwater consumption in India. A well-designed irrigation piping system can reduce water waste by 30–50% while improving crop yield. Choosing the right pipes is a critical first step.
Types of Irrigation Pipes
UPVC Column Pipes (Borewell)
Used to convey water from submersible pumps in borewells. UPVC column pipes are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to install compared to traditional GI pipes. They conform to IS 12818 and are available in 3m and 6m lengths.
UPVC Main Distribution Pipes
The backbone of surface irrigation networks. UPVC pipes (IS 4985) carry water from the source to sub-main networks at higher pressures. Available in Classes 2.5, 4, 6, and 10 for different pressure requirements.
Lateral Distribution Lines
Smaller diameter pipes (typically 32–63mm) that distribute water to individual rows or sprinkler/drip emitters. Low-pressure UPVC or LLDPE pipes are commonly used.
Selection Criteria
| Factor | Guidance |
|---|---|
| Water source pressure | Select pressure class 25–50% above maximum operating pressure |
| Flow rate | Size pipes for velocity 0.6–1.2 m/s for mains |
| Water quality | Corrosive/saline water: UPVC preferred over GI |
| UV exposure | Above-ground runs need UV-stabilised pipes |
| Chemical use | Fertiliser injection: use UPVC, avoid metal |
Water-Saving Benefits of Piped Irrigation
- Flood irrigation: 40–60% water efficiency
- UPVC pipe sprinkler system: 70–75% water efficiency
- Drip irrigation with UPVC mainlines: 85–95% water efficiency
Switching from open channels to UPVC piped distribution can reduce irrigation water losses by up to 40%, recovering the system cost within 2–3 crop seasons.
King Pipe manufactures IS-certified UPVC column pipes and irrigation pipes in a wide range of sizes and pressure classes. View our Agriculture Pipes range or request a quotation.
