Top 5 Plumbing Mistakes to Avoid in Your New Home Construction

Plumbing errors made during construction can be expensive and disruptive to fix later. Whether you’re a homeowner, contractor, or project manager, knowing these common mistakes can save you significant time and money.

Mistake 1: Using the Wrong Pipe for the Application

Using UPVC pipes for hot water service is one of the most common errors. UPVC is designed for cold water and drainage only. Always use CPVC for hot water supply lines. Similarly, never use plumbing-grade pipes for drainage where SWR pipes are required.

Mistake 2: Incorrect Slope in Drain Lines

Drain pipes must maintain a minimum slope of 1:60 (roughly 1.7%) for effective drainage. Too flat causes blockages; too steep causes water to run ahead of solids, again leading to blockages. Use a spirit level at every run.

Mistake 3: Too Many Fittings and Bends

Each elbow, tee, and bend creates friction loss and potential weak points. Plan your routing to minimise fittings. Use 45° elbows instead of 90° where possible for smoother flow and less pressure drop.

Mistake 4: Skipping Pipe Supports

Hot water pipes expand and contract with temperature changes. Inadequate clamping causes pipes to sag, creates stress at joints, and leads to leaks. Use the correct bracket spacing: CPVC every 600mm horizontal, 1200mm vertical.

Mistake 5: Not Planning for Future Access

Embedding pipes in walls and floors without access points is a costly mistake. Install clean-out plugs in drain lines, leave access panels at valve and junction points, and document your pipe routing with photos before plastering.

Professional tip: Always pressure test your pipe network before closing walls. A 30-minute static pressure test at 1.5× operating pressure will reveal any joint defects before they cause damage.
